Most of us could only imagine the life that Irene Pollin has lived. In Irene and Abe An Unexpected Life, she details her life’s journey with her husband, from the time they fell in love as teenagers through their experience bringing NBA basketball and NHL hockey to the Nation’s Capital, and ultimately, to Mr. Pollin’s passing in 2009.

Irene writes about the thrills of owning professional sports teams (Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals) and building two highly successful sports and entertainment arenas, the Capital Centre in 1973 and the Verizon Center in 1997. She also writes about the joy of raising children and the heartbreak of losing children to heart disease. She chronicles the challenges she faced through her multi-faceted career, from psychotherapist and published author, to founder of Sister to Sister, the country’s first organization dedicated to women’s heart disease prevention and education.

Irene and Abe An Unexpected Life eBook Irene Pollin

This is a book, about a long and extremely consequential life, that I happily devoured in an evening. There are names of the famous, (Presidents and sports luminaries), but most especially, it is a very revealing personal story of a marriage, and a public life lived in the nation's capital. It chronicles the path of a bright, beautiful, young woman who finds her life partner before her twenties, suffers unimaginable tragedies by the end of her thirties and emerges to pronounce "life begins at 60". For decades, Irene Pollin counseled chronically ill patients by day and spent evenings attending the games played by the professional sports franchises she and Abe had purchased, after the deaths of two of their children. And somehow, there was time for philanthropy and public health advocacy, but most especially, for a devoted family life. And now, after Abe's passing and in her 10th decade, she proposes to "move ahead with new ideas and prospects". Reading her story should discourage anyone tempted to withdraw from the world, but rather to embrace her capacity for confrontation and to always find a way forward.

An Unexpected Life moved me in more ways than any book I have ever read. It has changed me personally!
a book about locals so interesting in terms of learning about people in the community
wonderful people, a good read !
Wonderful book. Since I know Irene, and had the opportunity to meet Abe once, it was very moving and meaningful to read their story. I'm so glad Irene took the time to share their story with the world. They have touched many lives and provided such great services to more people than anyone will ever be able to document. The Pollin family is a real blessing.
Having had the privilege of working in the "Capital Centre Family" for over 15 years, I found this book a fascinating read and finished it over one weekend. Abe ("Mr. Pollin") and Irene cared deeply about others and it truly showed in all they did. Thank you, Mrs. Pollin, for writing this book!
This is an extraordinary book with universal appeal. It can be read on many different levels. But, the message that one can live an exciting, full life while also being sad from major life losses is extraordinary. And, it is told in an unvarnished, straight forward thoughtful way. It can only enhance the readers' capacity to live life to its fullest in a realistic way. I highly recommend this wonderful story by a thoughtful, caring woman.
This is a book for those who want to learn how to come from a place of suffering and pain and then change the world with dignity, integrity and grace. Irene Pollin over and over is able to translate a simple vision into straightforward action that is transformative to so many. Her special gift is her intuitive understanding of the essential core issues and her ability to then create structures that allow people to help themselves, whether in dealing with tragedy and chronic illness or taking charge of their own heart health. At any point she could have surrendered to her personal losses or simply coasted in the world of sports and glamour, but she never let go of her innate sense of the meaningful path. Her book is honest and un-self-conscious you feel the numbing paralysis of tragedy and the quiet strength that allowed her to move forward. And you see how many people she has helped who don’t even know it!
